Travel Day 129 To South Mills, NC 4/26/22 5000 NM

We have traveled 5000 NM!

We left Little Alligator River early to get across the Albemarle Sound before the winds picked up. It was a little bumpy, 2 foot across the beam which makes for a rolly ride. Our boat handles that fine. Nothing fell or moved in the cabinets but we take precautions beforehand. Our cabinets, refrigerator and freezer doors are all securely closed. When we open them after a bumpy ride we do it with caution.

Since we didn't get to take Izzy to land we stopped after the Elizabeth City Bridge at Mid-Atlantic Christian Academy's free dock. This was a quick stop to walk her, but the place and docks were really nice. We met a couple on a sailboat that said they stay there for several nights when passing through.

Originally we had reservations at Lamb's Marina but we called and cancelled. (something you should always do so they can give the slip to another boater.) We decided to go up as far as we could so that we could get to Norfolk as early as possible on Wednesday. I have a 1930 flight to NY for medical reasons. The locks and bridges in the Dismal Swamp open at 8:30, 11:00, 1:30 and 3:30. We timed it to get to the South Mills Lock before the 3:30 opening. We got there at 2:40 and waited. Our original plan was to go to the Dismal Swamp Visitor's Center and stay there. Unfortunately, the dock was full. I messaged people on Nebo and found someone who would raft up with us but after talking it over we decided to stay at the free bulkhead/wall between the South Mills bridge and lock. There was already a boat there, Last Hurrah. This turned out to be a nice quiet place to tie up. We walked to the Citgo station and inside they sell pizza and fried chicken. After getting the chicken we walked back for a quiet night of relaxing and planning. Staying at this wall we were able to use our generator for air conditioning and heat without bothering anyone.

South Mills Lock goes up 8 feet.

A real well!
