Arriving after the Troy Lock, we were able to get room on the free wall. This is where the Erie Canal begins. The Waterford Flight is 5 locks that bring you up 198 feet. The locks have either ropes, pipes, or cables to hold on to. We found it easier to have a line with a piece of firehose for chaffing protection to wrap around the cable or pipes as we go up. This way we were able to let the boat and cleats do the hard work. When the lock had ropes we each needed to hold on to one rope in the bow and one in the stern.
Gloves were a must!
Since Canada is closed we hooked a left!
A 40' boat in the giant lock chamber.
Waiting to go through the locks we stayed at the Visitor's Center.
A bird's eye view of the lock. The lock chamber is filled on the left.
Since we were there for two days I hiked the Peebles Island trail.
These signs are posted at each lock.
Here is a lock gate closing behind us. Hold on! Going up!
